Cannon Place wins technical excellence award at GE Awards 2010
Pouring cement on site
Byland Engineering acted as specialist geotechnical designer to Expanded Piling Limited on the complicated Cannon Place Redevelopment Project in London. Byland were responsible for the element pile design and technical aspects of pile construction. GCG were responsible for the global geotechnical design, Foggo Associates was the Consultant and Laing O’Rourke was the Main Contractor. Byland first became involved with the project in September 2006 and the final pile was installed during December 2009.
The works involved the design and construction of micropile groups, large diameter piles and under ream piles, all within a very restricted inner city site. There was considerable innovation in the design of the micropile groups which acted as large diameter composite piles capable of supporting column loads of up to 18MN. The works included a comprehensive preliminary test pile programme to determine the geotechnical design parameters and to confirm the optimum construction techniques, including achieving verticality’s of 1 in 200 or better.
Cannon Place beat strong competition from Weymouth Relief Road, Tyne Tunnel Crossing and the A5 Western Transport Corridor to win this coveted annual award. A technical paper has been written on Cannon Place for the International Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Conference to be held in London in May 2010 (see Technical Papers & Awards).
